What Is YOUR Value Proposition?
Every company has a value proposition. That is a statement of their perceived value to their clients. Often a company will have one perception at the executive level, another at the sales level, and even a third one at the client level. Value propositions need to be aligned so that the customer is getting a consistent message. If the value proposition is not aligned you will have different level, different directions, and different speeds that not aiming at the same results. If you take the time to find out what others are saying about your value and compare that to what you think your value is, you may be quite surprised that the two values are not the same. If you aim to keep happy customers, then you must change your value proposition to match that of the customer's perception. I have a colleague that was working on a company assessment to find out if the value proposition from the executive level, sales level, and customer level were the same. What he found was that this company and others of similar size ($100 M in sales) do not align their value proposition to what the customer sees as the value, In fact, he found that what they thought was the best part of their company was actually not very important to the customer. Ask yourself what your value proposition should be, not what you think it should be. Work with your clients to achieve an alignment of perceived values and actual value. Keep a record of everything that is said about the company and its value. Help them to understand what they bring to the table and you will likely win more business. It's too expensive and the audience is too broad. The ads on television are not targeted enough. Think back to the last time your entire family was gathered around a television set. It was fun family time, but think of how different each member of your family is. The children at different ages want different things. Are You Making the Most of Your Intern? KEEPING INTEREST HIGH: Supervision is key to the success of the program. Interns like direction, but don't like to feel they are being constantly checked on. Even this small amount of direction, however, can take a great deal of time. It is important to be willing to set aside this time to give the intern direction. One method that seems to work calls for a briefing at the beginning of each day and a "where-do-we-stand?" briefing at its end. Throughout the day, the manager is on hand to answer any questions that might come up -- remember this is a learning experience! There should also be additional time set aside throughout the duration of the internship during which the manager receives feedback from the intern on his or her satisfaction with the assignment and suggestions for future directions. Equally important, interns should receive feedback on their progress. They need to know if they are performing to the manager's expectations. Additionally, many interns have chosen to keep diaries and time logs documenting their involvement. These can be reviewed at the conclusion of that person's internship. Do Your Best; Hire the Rest One of the hidden perks of raising six children is the learning laboratory it provides for the parents. My wife and I have learned how important it is to teach our children to do things for themselves and become problem solvers. There isn't enough time to do it any other way with a house full of children. Learning how to tie your shoes, make a telephone call and solve for two unknowns in an algebraic equation are examples of goals society sets for children. Undeniably, do it yourself skills are important for all of us to acquire. Accounting and Billing Procedures for Small Business No matter how small your small business is, it is essential to have some sort of accounting and billing police and methodology. This will prevent you from making mistakes and upsetting vendors or even bouncing checks. Most sole proprietor and single employee companies do not have a plan of attack for accounting and billing procedures until there is a crisis. There is no sense in allowing a crisis to take hold, especially when a few procedures are set in place to prevent it. Remember Noah built the Ark before the rain. |
