Dont Assume You Cant Do it, Just Because Conventional Wisdom Says you Cant
Be weary and leery when it comes to standardized tests and things of that nature that attempt to gauge your intelligence, aptitude, or ability to achieve at your given goal or dreams. Please don't misunderstand me, such things can and do have their place and even be quite effective in steering a person towards the right career path, classes to take in college, or which educational degree to pursue. The flip side of the coin, however; is that they can also end up being terribly fatalistic with regards to what you believe you're suited for, career wise, starting your own business, etc., or personally capable of achieving for that matter! I can't help but wonder how many people have fallen victim to such things simply because they believed such tests to be all knowing. Along the same lines, what about how many people were literally discouraged from doing something they might otherwise have thoroughly enjoyed doing. Perhaps through shear perseverance they might have even come to excel in the given area. One might cite Albert Einstein as such an example. Following his early years in education one would have been hard pressed to assume he'd earn the label of "genius". The problem as I see it, strictly from my observations and personal experience with a number of "great achievers" if you will, is that absolute love and excitement for what you do is far more often what leads to one's eventual success and achievements in a given area. Rarely is it how someone may, or may not have scored on a given test. I'd like to use myself as an example. The simple fact is if you were to look at absolutely any of my tests, etc. and judge me solely on that basis you'd say there was no way I'd have been fortunate enough to experience many of the things I've done. Please don't assume I am tooting my own horn here, ok? The point I am trying to make is simply this... The tests may have been correct. I might have been "better suited" in other areas of life. Things might have come easier in the short run had I chosen another career choice. The thing is that I wanted to take my own path so much, that through my own life experiences I was able to figure my way around many of the stumbling blocks I've run into. Certainly I've made my share of mistakes. I've missed the boat on a whole lot of opportunities as well I'd bet. Perhaps things might have even been a bit easier had I followed the advice of others and the tests I'd taken. The thing is though, I'd have missed so much. I'd have missed a whole lot of happiness along the way as well. Perhaps most of all, I'd have missed sharing this very writing with you. My friend, follow your dream even when conventional wisdom might suggest otherwise. -- Here's to your success, Josh Hinds About The Author: Josh Hinds of http://GetMotivation.com specializes in helping people to achieve maximum success and live the life of their dreams -- receive his motivation newsletter by going to http://GetMotivation.com/ezines.html. An effective self- concept generates the desire to strive for things that were thought to be impossible before. It generates fight, but it doesn't kick dogs and slap babies. Habits and Success I got a big reminder over the last couple of weeks about what happens when you let your good habits slip - and how easy it is to fall into the trap of being overwhelmed. Persistence is Tops To take the online road to success is not, contrary to millions of internet and email ads, the short road traveled. There is enormous revenue potential through online channels, predicted to top $8 billion by 2005. We all would like our piece of the pie, but unfortunately some don't want to work to get to it. Empowering Other People Everything you will ever have and accomplish in life will be done through other people. Learning to get things done through others is absolutely essential to your happiness and success in life. Your ability to get others to help you and cooperate with you will determine how much you get done and how high you rise in everything you set out to accomplish. Your ability to enlist the knowledge, energy, and resources of others will enable you to leverage yourself so that you can accomplish far more than the average person and in a far shorter period of time. Back-Planning For Success Coming up with new dreams and passions can be fun, easy and inspiring - at least until you sit down and begin trying to sort out how to actually accomplish these wild goals. Suddenly, what seemed like such a clear and well-marked path takes on the aspect of an overgrown and thickly brambled wilderness of dangerous, unseen pitfalls and endlessly branching and unmarked trails. It's enough to make you want to crawl back into your boring old life and forget the whole thing ever happened. But let's try something a little different, first, and see if we can't tame that overgrown jungle. 7 Ways to improve Your Listening Skills Do you know how much time do you spend listening? It is estimated that half of our time is spent listening. Good listening is an essential part of active communication and makes us better managers, customers, coworkers, supervisors, parents and mates. Most of us aren't good listeners; however, listening is a skill that you can always improve. People Are Who They Want To Be Choice isn't always a matter of being able to choose what happens to us. Life happens, and often without any say from us. However, our circumstances do not determine who we become. Only we have the choice to determine that. Everyone is who he or she wants to be, regardless of what one might think. We all have choices and each choice leads to the creation of who we are. What Is Success Anyway? Success is creating what you want the way you want it to be. The Winning Edge Theory One of the greatest challenges people face when trying to make personal improvement is feeling overwhelmed. This probably stems from the belief that in order to make incredible progress in their life, they will have to start by creating a long and detailed list of the things they are doing wrong and all the things they are going to have to change. Success ...Whats the Key Ingredient? Don't expect results over night - what?? Are You Afraid of Success? You may not realise it yet but you may have been "programmed" to fail! Life Lesson--Be, Do, Have This revelation hit me the other day while I was listening to a cassette on having financial balance in your life. On the tape, the author talked about a goal setting seminar he went to. The lesson he was revealing is that too often when we set goals, we are setting the "have" part of the equation, then "doing" the work of getting to the goal without ever making the effort to "be" anything. Success - Your Are What You Think About You have complete control over your thoughts. Thought patterns develop over a lifetime; a result of the influences of schooling, parents, friends, relatives, TV, movies, etc. |
