Working as a Winning Team
It's a great sunny day so it's time to get out and enjoy the weather. Many of us would like to, but we have projects due, tasks that need to be done, people that we need to see, and money that needs to be made. What if your company gave you that time off as compensation for the great effort that you gave to the team to finish a project on time? See, when it comes to teamwork the main focus is for the team to work together. In a "Winning" team there is an equal balance of people that have unique strengths and weaknesses. Take the example of the "Chicago Bulls" of the 1990s. Michael Jordan was the greatest basketball player to play the game, but did they win a championship every year that Michael had played? No. It took a (D-type) Michael Jordan to lead the team and control the outcome. It took a (I-type) wild and energetic Dennis Rodman to keep the team fun and interesting. It took a (S-type) Scottie Pippin, Bill Cartwright, and John Paxson to support the team. And it took the (C-type) analytical mind of Phil Jackson (coach) to create a foundation for the players to play on. In the end they (Chicago Bulls) were able to capture six championships within eight years. What is your team made up of, ...all Jordans, ...all Jacksons, ...all Rodmans, ...or all Pippins, Cartwrights, Paxsons? It is your choice who's on your team. For this next month try finding the right people for the right job, and you will have a "Winning" team every time. Raising Issues In Your Group or Offline In a recent group coaching session, a client mentioned that he thought his monthly meetings with his peers were dysfunctional. He felt they achieved "false closure" on key decisions - they'd discuss an issue, not make a clear decision, and move on, all acting as if they were clear. He felt one person took too much airtime on a regular basis, that the agendas weren't focused. On top of all this, people would come to him individually after these meetings to complain to him about them - and said they wanted their concerns kept confidential, and that they weren't willing to raise them in the group. They had formal time set aside for discussing how the meetings went and he couldn't remember the last time they had actually done this. No one raised this, either. What?s Wrong With You, Why Don?t You Understand Me? Recently while waiting for our lunch to be served in a nearby restaurant, my husband Michael and I were discussing our son's upcoming science fair project. Michael was describing the steps that my son should follow to complete the assignment. While Michael was going through this elaborate process, I diligently tried to follow what he was saying, but I sat there completely clueless. As I struggled to gain a better understanding of what he was talking about, my normally affable husband started to show distinct sings of irritation. His unspoken message was 'what's wrong with you, why don't you understand me?" He then proceeded to draw his plan on a napkin in an effort to get his brilliant idea into my dense head. It worked. When Michael started to show me what he was describing, I was able to easily understand his ideas. Marche, or How Teams Work. He was colorful, hard core and got the job done. His leadership skills have been touted by some and criticized by weaker individuals.
