Trinkets, Lockets And Empty Pockets
It never ceases to amaze me how many people set-up a website, without any type of plan or clue about how to promote it, how to write a sales letter, how to write an ad-- nothing! Even more amazing is how many people try to conduct business online without any money. The other day, I received an e-mail from a woman named Nadia inquiring about my E-mail Consultation Service. In her e-mail, she explained she had "empty pockets" and couldn't afford my subscription fee. However, since her ancestors were gypsies, she had plenty of jewelry and she'd be willing to pay me with a few "trinkets and lockets," in exchange for my help. I politely declined her offer. I get my share of crazy e-mails, so I have no idea if that one was a hoax or not. I'm assuming it was, since I never heard back from Nadia. Besides, I get so many e-mails every day from people asking me for free help and advice, I generally skim over them quickly and delete them. People, listen to me, please! You can't conduct business online or offline without any money. You just can't do it! Now I'm not saying you need thousands of dollars--although that wouldn't hurt. However, you need to at least have two or three hundred dollars in the bank to work with. It's a myth that you can make money without having any money- -just a myth! The number one reason why most businesses fail is because they're undercapitalized. They come online with just enough money to buy one ad--hoping to make a killing! If that ad happens to be a success--bingo, instant cash flow! But if that one ad fails, just like that, they're out of business. I know you're excited about your new business, and you can't wait to get started. However, instead of rushing into things, take a few more weeks or months to save up a little more money, and then get started. Doing it that way does require a little more patience. But by having a little money to fall back on, you give yourself a greater chance to succeed, and in the long run, you'll be a lot better off! All of the biggest money makers have eye-catching, simple, innovative, and the cleanest websites online! Server Side Includes (SSI) with ASP People often have identical sections of code spread throughout many ASP pages, typically code at the top of the page (usually referred to as the header) and the lower part of the page (the footer). Consider an example:- Maximizing ROI via Web Site Traffic Analysis We are clearly well past the innocent "golden age" of the Internet ? Darwinian economics have become the order of the day today. Any company worth their salt must maintain a web site as an information resource and/or to generate incremental ecommerce revenue. Qualified traffic is the name of the game, as it's the oxygen that keeps a good ecommerce web site thriving. Consequently, it's very important to have an understanding of your web site traffic or visitor activity; i.e. baseline information that includes the number of visitors during specific time periods, originating location (domain), where the visitors went on a site and how long they stayed on specific sections or pages of a web site. The de facto industry standard traffic analysis tool application is Web Trends, manufactured/supported by netiQ, Inc., which we will focus on in this article. Have You Got Your Ear To The Ground Or Your Head In The Sand? What happened on your website yesterday? What about last week or last month? How about in the past hour? Tell me what your website does! You know exactly what your organisation does and what your website offers its users. Website, website, website, everyone says you need one. But do you really? It all depends. It depends on your market, business objectives, and even your comfort level and if you are willing to step outside of it. Your Content for Nothing and Your Clicks for Free The first thing my business consultant (read brother-in-law) asked me, when I told him that I wanted to build a website and put AdSense on it was, "Do you want to build a site to help people or to make money?" After thinking about it for a while I couldn't imagine why I shouldn't do both. Why not a website that helps people and generates money for me? My consultant looked at me like I had taken one too many falls off my bike, which he knew I road primarily to save on the cost of gas, but he proceeded forward. Get to Know People through Websites Web sites are not just places to sell things; they are a medium where people can get insight into other people's lives. Take the musician Xavier Rudd for example. I recently saw this guy play at a concert and had never previously heard his music. He was really cool, literally blowing me away with his many skills, beautiful music, positive energy, and humble attitude. So being thus affected, I decided to check out if he had a website on the Internet. Your Website Should Be Selling It may come as some surprise to a traditionally off-line business that their website should be attracting new sales, or at least supporting the sales they have made. There is a common misconception that a website is more of a cost than an asset. When I ask companies why they would like a website the common answer is, "I don't know?" It seems to me that having a website is more of a reflex than something that is planned to help grow sales for the company. In other words, "Every business has one, I should too." |
