Why Should I Take Nutritional Supplements?
Do you ever wonder why the experts keep saying that you need to take supplements? Why won't a healthy, balanced diet work? There are 3 main reasons that you need to take quality nutritional supplements each & every day. In this article, I want to go over these 3 reasons we need to supplement our diets. Reason #1: Food Production Methods In between harsh farming methods, toxic chemical sprays, harvesting the foods prematurely, & storing foods for long periods of time, much of the nutrients that should be in our food just aren't there. Recent scientific studies show that a mere fraction of the nutrients that should be in foods are still there. Especially nutrients such as enzymes & phytonutrients, which are very fragile, are destroyed long before the food reaches your table, if the nutrients were even there to start with. Reason #2: Modern Day Diets I sincerely doubt that there are too many health experts that could honestly say that the average American's diet is "healthy." Saturated fat is not the only part of our modern day diet that is unhealthy...we don't get enough vitamins, antioxidants, glyconutrients, etc, etc. in our diets. If you would like to know how unhealthy the modern day diet really is, go to http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?file=/c/a/2004/04/21/DDG8767ITN1.DTL Reason #3: Environmental Stress The amount of toxins that we absorb each day is nothing short of horrendous. Researchers recently announced that if you go to Los Angeles, CA for two weeks, you will absorb more dangerous toxins in two weeks than is healthy for you to absorb during your entire life! All of these toxins have a serious effect on your health. Nutritional supplementation is one way that you can fight the downward pull of sickness. Even the American Medical Association now recommends that you supplement your diet. Historically, the AMA has been opposed to nutritional supplementation-they believed that most people got all they needed in their food. But, due to the unprecedented poor nutrient supply in the food, & the declining health of the US population, the AMA now considers nutritional supplements essential! So, if you want to be healthy-if you want to have wellness-get the best supplements that you can, & take them regularly. The bottom line is that if you don't supplement, you will never have the best health that you could. To Your Health, Adam J. Thompson Adam J. The Benefits of Whey Protein Concentrate Whey protein concentrate popularity has increased dramatically in recent years because of advances in processing technology. Whey protein begins as a watery byproduct of cheese manufacturing. In its crude state, whey is about 93% water, 6.5% lactose, 0.9% protein and 0.2% vitamins, minerals, and fat-soluble nutrients. In this form, whey is not of much benefit to athletes, but with gentle low-temperature processing and filtration, this liquid can be stripped of most of its lactose, fat, cholesterol and water to yield concentrated whey powders containing anywhere from 34 to 89% protein. 3 Steps to Identify Supplements that Lack Scientific Evidence You read about a supplement that allegedly "Boosts your mood and motivation!" That sure sounds good so your surf over to the company's web site. The web site looks official--it's even got footnotes citing scientific journals. You're ready to purchase the supplement online until you ask yourself, "What if this supplement doesn't really possess any scientific evidence for its efficacy? How can I tell the difference between supplements with solid evidence for their reported benefits versus those lacking any scientific support?" Here are the 3 Steps to answer those questions: Step 1: Go to http://www.pubmed.org which is a National Library of Medicine (United States) web site where you can search for articles published in peer-reviewed scientific journals. Why check PubMed? Because the National Library of Medicine carefully selects only high-quality journals that offer value to medical scientists around the world. Selection criteria are detailed on this web page: http://www.nlm.nih.gov/pubs/factsheets/jsel.html Step 2: Once on the PubMed web site, search for research articles using the generic (scientific) name of the supplement in question. Supplement manufacturers must list the scientific name for their supplement's ingredients on the label and in advertisements. Supplements often contain many ingredients but usually only a few provide the purported benefits. Those are the ingredients you want to evaluate--they are often the same ones the manufacturer highlights in advertisements. Step 3: This is the step some supplement companies don't want you to know. Before you click on the "Search" button at PubMed.org, limit your search to studies that utilize the right research methodology with the right population. The right research methodology is a randomized controlled trial (the double-blind, placebo control group design fits under this category) and the right population is human beings. Specifying human subjects is important because you want to know if the ingredients in a supplement have been shown to produce the advertised benefits in real live human beings--not just in rats pressing levers for food pellets or in a "case study" with one person. This is not to say that basic science research, which is often conducted initially with animals, is unimportant. On the contrary, such research usually serves as a crucial building block for subsequent clinical research with humans. But basic science research does not provide scientific evidence for a supplement's beneficial health effects on human beings. Only research with human subjects, using randomized controlled trials, can offer such evidence. On the PubMed.org search page, click on the "Limits" tab located under the "Search" box. You will see a number of drop-down menus. First click on the Publication Type menu and then select Randomized Controlled Trial. Next click on the drop-down menu labeled, Humans or Animals and click on Humans. An Example Morinda citrifolia is the scientific name for a popular ingredient in a nutritional supplement. First search on PubMed for Morinda citrifolia, without placing Limits on your search. How many results did you receive? The count was 69 at the time I wrote this article. Looks impressive, huh? But now search for Morinda citrifolia after first placing Limits on the search as described above, so that you receive only those studies which provide more definitive scientific evidence for the positive effects of Morinda citrifolia. How many journal articles did you find searching with the specified limits? I found 1. Thus, out of 69 articles found on PubMed.org, only one provides some evidence for Morinda citrifolia's beneficial effects. Supplements and Drugs: A Hazardous Combination As I have become more involved in using functional nutritional therapy in my practice, I have come to realize that many people are still confused about the safety and effectiveness of various dietary supplements. Phytoestrogen - The Role of Phytoestrogens in Breast Development & Health What exactly are phytoestrogens, and how can we use them to our benefit in the development of the breasts, and as a healthy addition to our diet? Phytoestrogens are also quickly becoming the buzz as natural breast enlargement alternatives, and hormone replacement therapy for women going through menopause. Vitamin B5 - Your Digestive System Depends On It Vitamin B5 or pantothenic acid plays a supporting role in the secretion of hormones, such as cortisone. In so doing, Vitamin B5 assists body metabolism, wards off body allergies and helps keep the skin, muscles, and nerves in optimum condition. The human body also needs the help of Vitamin B to release energy as well as to metabolize fat, protein, and carbohydrates. Without this vitamin, the body will encounter problems with creating neurotransmitters, certain hormones, and haemoglobin. This gives you an idea how important this vitamin is to the body's vital functions! Great sources of Vitamin B5 are beef, brewer's yeast, eggs, fresh vegetables, kidney, legumes, liver, mushrooms, nuts, pork, royal jelly, saltwater fish, and whole-wheat foods. Vitamin B5 Deficiencies Research also indicates that lack of enough Vitamin B5 in the body can lead to fatigue, headaches, nausea, depression, and even moodiness. If you find yourself prone to infection, fatigue, abdominal pains, sleep disturbances and neurological disorders, you might consider taking prescribed amounts of Vitamin B5. Is your diet utterly lacking in non-refined foods? Are you taking a lot of alcohol? If you answered yes to any of these questions, you will need more Vitamin B5 in your system. Vitamin B5 Dosage The Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA) is between 10 to 100 mg. Exceeding the limit usually leads to diarrhea; with taking 15 or more times the limit usually leading to hypersensitive teeth. Vitamin B5 performs best when taken with the rest of the B complex vitamins, and with Vitamin A, C, and E. The Benefits of Protein Powders I know protein is good for me, but do I need a supplement?
