Small Business Failures in America - Cash Flow Issues
We are noticing an increase in the length of time it takes Large corporations to pay on their invoices to our team. Fortune 500s are tending to pay their vendors more slowly, which will hurt the already strapped small businesses in America. These same small businesses employ 2/3 the population and do a great service in supplying the needs of corporations. At the company I run, The Car Wash Guys, has retail and fleet customers. Retail pay cash, which tends to offset the problems with the extended late payments from fleet accounts. It appears that the corporations are conserving their cash to keep earning up until the next quarter, however this will hurt their long term efforts in that the small businesses who provided real time services and parts will not be able to meet the real time demand and therefore cause cost overruns for the Manufacturing sectors. Therefore decreasing productivity and causing a problem with their efficiency efforts. Who will be hurt worst? Likely high tech non able to perform on time for their industries, and their stockholders in decreased valuations of stocks, which do not hit their earnings guestimatation or quotas. Also hurt will be the retail outlets who need items in the store on time to meet consumer demand. The biggest hurt in the long haul will be all of us in America due to increased small business failures of those operating on a shoe string. Some of these weak small businesses should be weeded out thru abnormal free market factors such as this slow pay and others who are just working to hit ROIs and pay off loans will be hurt. This hurts interest rates because risk adverse banks stop lending to small businesses. It hurts SBA guaranteed loan programs and that affects all of us. It is serious and will most likely lead to unnecessary laying off of people who make up the largest percentage of American working people. Small businesses represent 2/3 of all American Workers. It think this problem will get worse as CFO look for ways to keep cash as long as possible, by stringing out their receivables. Phone companies, electric companies and other bills must be paid on time by the small businesses, whereas theses companies are notorious for slow pay in tough economic times. It seems to be the little guy who gets it in the shorts, such is life and an acceptable given, yet it also effects us as our customer base is decreasing. What about the labor and layoffs? As small businesses are unable to employ the lion share of the masses, there will be fewer with money to spend on those items sold by larger corporations. How does this occur and how are small businesses losing? Slow pay means slow payment of bills and adverse credit scores. Also the 60 days of cash flow in the bank will be used in the float. That float some small businesses can absorb, but some small businesses will be beaten down and become inefficient and cannot last that 60 days and neither can most of the nearly 28 million small businesses in this country that pay their bills, buy products and services and feed the families of their workers. This is the most serious problem facing the US economy and it is still moving in the wrong direction as of first quarter 2001. This is not good. Historically Car Washing tracks the new car sales markets, so our particular company should be fine. Also as any small business will tell you they must be constantly adapting their methods of operations to those forces, which might be a threat. Window Cleaning Business Future Challenge With Self Cleaning Glass Self-cleaning glass has been talked about a lot, with such a catchy name in his hit the headlines of not only the trade journals, but also the mass media. Does self-cleaning glass mean that all the window cleaners and small businesses across this country are doomed? No, not yet. First of all, self-cleaning glass is not really self-cleaning at all, so many Industry call it low maintenance glass, but either way the idea is intriguing and appeals to consumers. In a recent article in Window and Door magazine, in March of 2003 the industry was asked what they thought of self-cleaning glass many of those interviewed were among the building industry, interior designers, architects, glass manufacturers, new homebuilders, tenant improvements retrofitters and window cleaning service companies. Having been watching the developments of self-cleaning windows for quite some time, we see a time when the big mirrored glass buildings will no longer need the same frequency of services. What does this mean for companies like; the Window Genie; the Window Gang; the Window Butler; and the Window Wash Guys. Got Stimulation? Small Business Publicity -- Worth It? You bet it's worth it. Publicity via news releases, along with building relationships with reporters and editors is really good for your small business. Mobile Car Wash Market Opportunities in California The current lack of industry leaders represents an exceptional opportunity for a large and organized mobile car wash company to achieve regional domination and eventually dominate the Southern California carwash market. The best place to start a regional assault on this market would be to concentrate North and West of Los Angeles; Chatsworth and Simi Valley to Malibu and Tarzana to Santa Barbara. Once these relatively competition free markets are won Los Angeles, San Diego, Riverside and San Bernardino counties could be dominated by a steady city-by-city methodology. From there the company should include neighboring regions and Sun Belt States. By setting up each territory next to an existing territory, they will, brick by brick, build an impenetrable wall to ward off would-be competitors. Utilizing their satellite offices, they can build that wall rapidly by connecting each area. As this occurs, we will have achieved regional and eventually national name recognition and proceed to other long-term goals. Small Businesses - Big Obstacles Everyone is talking about small businesses. In 1993, when it was allowed, more than 90,000 new firms were registered by individuals. Now, less than three years later, official figures show that only 40,000 of them still pay their dues and present annual financial statements. These firms are called "active" - but this is a misrepresentation. Only a very small fraction really does business and produces income. Reverse Merger: Have They Taken the Reverse out of Reverse Merger? Are the promoters and consultants destroying the market for Reverse Merger? First lets take a look at reverse merger. In a Reverse Merger, an operating private company merges with a public company that has little or no assets, nor know liabilities (the "shell"). Small Business 101: Deadly Ignorance American small business is again in transition. Many employees, now working from home, are no longer tied to a geographic office and the woes of commuting. This is a relatively new phenomenon with hints of explosive sector growth in the days ahead. As this turbulent economy has forced downsizing, offshore restructuring and closures in large companies, many new entrepreneurs have been born. These are people, who instead of tirelessly attempting to find new employment and possibly enduring the same fate as previously experienced, are now starting small businesses and enjoying the benefits and perils of self-employment. Small Business Grants - Tips from the Pros Every business starts with an idea or a dream. To implement this idea or to turn your dream in to reality you require finance. A grant supports the business ideas and turns the dreams of an entrepreneur in to reality. SBIR vs STTR SBIR vs. STTR: If you are participating in the SBIR program you may also want to consider participating in the Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) Program. The STTR program is considered SBIR's twin sister, although there are some added hoops one must jump through in order to participate. Like SBIR, the STTR is the US Government's way of providing "seed" money to spawn technology growth. The key difference however is in the structure of the effort, whereas a small business must partner (via a subcontract) to a university or non-profit research institution in order to acquire STTR funding. Internships: Good for Everyone Many job applicants want a job but often do not have the prerequisite experience, experience that they can only have by getting a job. Managers who take the chance and hire them may have to spend considerable time and effort training them, only to find the new recruits unsuitable or unhappy with the jobs and looking for employment elsewhere. One way around this problem for many organizations is an internship program. For professionals in career transition as well as students and recent graduates, such programs provide working experience that otherwise would never be supplied to someone interested in a specific field. |
