Who Makes You Better?
Commit yourself to spending time only with people who are working to have a good life. Negative or lazy people will discourage you and bring you down to their level. As an old English saying goes, "Keep company with those make you better." Who makes you better? In other words: Who helps you to see what's great about yourself? Who motivates you to get the kind of results they achieve? Who is truly oriented to serving other people with kindness? Who wants to help you be successful? Henry Ford said one of his secrets to success was to spend time only with people who brought out the best in him. And, really, why would you want to spend time with anyone who doesn't help you to do better? On the other hand, are you surrounded by "crabs"? Crabs are people who are not working toward the life they want and, as a result, will attempt to tear down your efforts. Make every effort to identify and root out your "crabs." If you can't remove them from your life, at least stay determined not to let them damage your self-image or deter you on your progress toward a worthwhile goal. Mark Twain may have said it best: "Keep away from people who try to belittle your ambitions. Small people always do that, but the really great make you feel that you, too, can become great." Now, he had no friends, no money, no knowledge of Turkish, and no citizenship. He risked starvation. He also risked losing his sense of being special. If you have a successful job where you are rapidly moving up it is in large part because of the help you've received from your coworkers. If you own a successful and growing business it is in part because of your employees and the relationships you've developed with other businesses associates. 8 Categories to Instantly Organize Your Success Strategy You're enjoying a perfectly shallow conversation with a good friend over coffee, discussing your oldest child's latest broken bone fiasco and how long it takes you to drive across town with the traffic these days, when out of nowhere he asks, "Do you ever wonder where all this day to day will lead? What are your goals in life?" Think Yourself To Success -- The One Pager Shortcut Series -- Professional Success: Avoid Becoming A Dinosaur Jack Nichlaus was asked if there are really talented golfers who never make it. "Oh, hundreds of them", he replied. "A lot of people out there are more talented than I am and yet, through the years, I've passed them by...That's because they did not have the drive to keep on learning...In other words, they didn't try to get better." How I Changed The World There is no substitute for direct personal application. Information or knowledge will not change your life. Wishful thinking or daydreaming will not change your life. It is in the application of knowledge that power is secured and exercised. Success Without Excuses If we hope to achieve any worthwhile goal it will be necessary to throw out the excuses. Or have you fulfilled a plan but found that you have gone in the wrong direction? Catching the W.A.V.E.s of Greatness Greatness is all around us. From Oprah to Bill Gates to Einstein to Stephen Hawkins to Gandhi to Mother Teresa, we read, see and hear it every day and sometimes we even have the opportunity to feel greatness for others and ourselves. Yet, if greatness is all around us, then how can we catch the W.A.V.E.s of Greatness with increased frequency? Communication and Communication Skills - Understanding Your Audience Response means "to answer" and that idea, in its purest form means a complete and honest answer, with all of the detail that constitutes a meaningful communication. Semantics teaches us that we must appraise our "audience" and determine the language level, detail level, maturity level etc. of the person(s) to whom we are speaking. Only then can we communicate effectively. An obvious example is communicating with a child vs. an adult ... language, speed of speech and even gestures and facial expression should vary, based on the audience! Action Speaks Louder Than Words I have written much about how, in order to have more of what we desire in life, we must first do more and, that, in order to do more, we must first become more. In fact, the focus of the majority of my articles and books is about how to become more. I reiterate, time and time again, how important it is to acquire the specific knowledge of success if you want to have success. |
