People Are The Heart Of Your Organization
Do you let your people express their thoughts about the roles and responsibilities they have in your organisation? Don't just take it for granted that everything's fine because no one complains. Organisations often spend a fortune on purchasing office furniture/computer software/filing systems etc. only to find out they are unsuitable because the people who use them were never consulted about what their needs were. One of my clients moved into new premises some time ago and kept the old office furniture. It didn't suit the image of the new premises and caused real health problems with my client's team. One of the staff had a constant sore back and eyestrain - all related to her desk and chair; the other staff member suffered from sore wrists when working on the computer. Neither of them had mentioned anything to their boss. With all the rapid changes happening in an organisation, many bosses forget that it is their people who make their organisation tick. So talk to your team - find out their challenges and work out the solutions. If you ask questions and listen to your staff, you might just learn how to save yourself thousands of dollars! In my experience, if there is a major problem occurring in an organisation whether it is big or small, that problem is generally caused through poor communication. Having regular meetings with your team is crucial for a happy and productive workplace. Working with people is not like a production line. We are all different, with very different needs - "one size definitely does not fit all". Start today in your organisation - take action and get those lines of communication happening! Having Trouble Motivating Others? Try WIIFM Recently my fourteen-year old son Matt dressed up as Santa Claus and attended a Christmas caroling event for one of my professional organizations. Was my son excited about the idea of spending one of his evenings singing to seniors instead of being with his friends? Not really. Then how did I get Matt to agree so readily to come to the event and play Santa? It was easy; I told him that after we finish caroling we all go back to our host facility and enjoy delicious food. That was enough for Matt. He heard the word food and was ready and willing to go. I could have tried to motivate Matt by telling him what a wonderful thing he would be doing by making so many people happy. Your Administration Team - Look After Them In most organisations the administration/support team, although they can be acknowledged as being important to the business, they are treated as if they're not. Leadership Quality Through Kindness In days past, loyalty was a given. The worker in past generations frequently remained with a company for his or her lifetime. It was not just a matter of a company town, it was an ethic ... the job was guaranteed by tacit tradition and in return for an honest day's work, the employee had the comfort of lifetime employment. Frequently it was an unwritten contract. Loyalty was universal and protection of the employee was fundamental and gratuitous. Employees spoke well of their companies and insured that quality service was given and excellence in product was achieved. A Team That Gleamed Too many techies get a bad rap for lacking teamwork and communications skills. The stereotype is that while techies are great at what they are trained to do, they cannot parlay their knowledge onto others. Because of the stereotype that techies cannot communicate, they also can be stigmatized that they lack adequate teamwork skills. So, what are the chances of two Helpdesk teams communicating with each other to successfully form one team while not compromising customer service? How to Boost Morale In Your Organisation Who keeps the wheels turning in your organisation? Who holds it all together when chaos reigns supreme? Who can you rely on to run your department/business in your absence? Functioning in a Dysfunctional Workplace Sometimes the greatest challenges lay not within the actions of competitors, or the needs of customers, they come from within one's own company. People new to their positions either through promotion, or as a new hire, are often stunned at the challenges they find waiting for them as they slide into the seat behind their new desk. The business cards have barely been ordered before elements of dysfunction begin to appear at their office door. Team Building requires one great dynamic for true Success - Mateship A Successful Team is built around mateship, around respect for your team mates and for yourself. I am not saying that everyone will get on like best buddies, what I noticed is that in all our 'differences' everyone was accepted as they were, got on within the boundaries of the club and got the job done. I have seen teams that have been full of stars, as I am sure you have too, and those teams have not succeeded. They have not achieved their full potentials as individuals or as a team. The 3 Secrets of Team Motivation Are workers telling the truth when they say they are ill? This question was posed on the Money Programme on BBC Television in December 2004. British Bosses are reporting that more and more of their staff appear to be skiving off with faked illnesses and many firms are taking new steps to crack down on malingerers. Research by the Confederation of British Industry suggests that workplace absence is on the rise for the first time in five years. Last year we were off sick on average for 7.2 days up from 6.8 the previous year. It costs UK businesses 11.75bn a year, the CBI says. The CBI also estimates that 15% of all illness is due to people taking days off when they are not really ill. 12 Tips and Reminders for Team Members To Enjoy Their Team Experiences More 12 Tips and Reminders for Team Members To Enjoy Their Team Experiences More How to Turn Idea Squashers into Possibilities Managing a small business continues to become more challenging.
