How to be Healthier and Happier In Your Organisation
Did you know your work environment can actually make you sick? The affects of airconditioning Research has shown that airconditioning can cause allergies, respiratory infections, asthma, fatigue and headaches. And that's just a few things. If you don't believe me, have a look at what some of your workmates keep in their desk drawers. You'll find many of them keep enough pills and potions on hand to stock a pharmacy! In fact you could probably set up a special area in your organisation just for this. What about computers? Then we've got the excessive use of computers, where you have to sit down and stare at the screen for extended periods of time. This alone can cause postural problems ie. sore back, neck and wrists and of course eyestrain. Are you an excessive laptop user? The laptop is a particular area of concern as many people tend to use it as their main pc. "John", a management consultant had recently spent six weeks off work as a direct result of his regular use on the laptop. He would use it for hours at a time. Being constantly hunched over it to type as well as having a poorly designed chair all contributed to John's situation. He was also overweight and didn't do any regular exercise. His back could not cope. John estimated he had lost $50,000 worth of business! If he had been aware of this, he could have spoken with the organisation he was contracted to and looked at other options. Don't forget the support staff The admin/support staff are often the last people in an organisation who are given the right tools and environment to work in. Often the senior executives or managers are able to invest in any item known to mankind and the poor old admin people who are in the office all day long have to settle for a crappy old chair or sit in an area which is poorly lit and has a lovely view of the wall. How productive would anyone be in this situation? Does your office look good? Pay attention to the office decor. Does it look old and drab or modern and alive? Is it clean and uncluttered or does it look like a volcano has erupted? Not only will this affect your performance but also on how others see you and your department. ie. A clean, modern environment portrays an organised and "with it" organisation. Summary Provide your team with a positive environment to work in and you will experience less absenteeism, improved moral and increased productivity. Look after your people and they will be more inclined to think twice about leaving your organisation. Franchisee Relations and Team Work Franchisees of a particular franchise must get along in order for the team to hyperspace the competition. Recently our company; Franchising.org did a study and surveyed the franchisors on our website. As it turns out none of them had any information in their Confidential Operations Manual of any substance on how franchisees could increase their synergies by working very closely together within a region. Only a couple of companies had anything at all on the subject and indeed even these were limited to maybe one page or a couple of paragraphs. Team Member Feedback: A Priceless Communication Tool Feedback is such an important communication tool. Openness, honesty, candor, trust -- all of these are hallmarks of high performance teams and organizations. Good feedback skills are essential to any relationship. Always In Motion Is The Future It's the summer of 1973, and a young film director goes searching for a studio to distribute his new screenplay. Many say no, until one finally agrees to take a chance on him. Twentieth Century Fox has such little faith anyone will actually pay to see the movie that it agrees to give him - in exchange for the usual directing fee - 40% of the box office, plus sequel, publishing and merchandising rights. Virtual Team Work At a time when many companies are scaling down their marketing budgets, big design firms are finding it harder to win new clients and projects. Things maybe tough for the larger design firms, but the situation could be ideal for freelancers and other smaller boutique operations that can operate virtually. You are Excused from Training Trainers, please picture this... You are presenting in a new location to a new group. You are prepared for a one day workshop. Your materials are ready and you are "on". Things seem to be going well. You are building a nice rapport with the class and the pace of the training is right on schedule. About two hours into your day one participant starts to demonstrate disruptive behavior. This individual begins talking to the person beside him during the lecture. A few minutes later, during an activity this gentleman is doing everything in his power to take people's attention away from the subject at hand. As the calm cool trainer you are, you try to work with him to no avail, and his behavior is really starting to affect the others in the workshop. You've got about one hour to lunch, and you are now behind on your timeline? For the sake of the training, what do you do? 4 Tips for Keeping a Team Motivated Companies often have incentives for reps, but sometimes that isn't enough. To keep your team motivated, you could do a number of things: The 3 Secrets of Team Motivation Are workers telling the truth when they say they are ill? This question was posed on the Money Programme on BBC Television in December 2004. British Bosses are reporting that more and more of their staff appear to be skiving off with faked illnesses and many firms are taking new steps to crack down on malingerers. Research by the Confederation of British Industry suggests that workplace absence is on the rise for the first time in five years. Last year we were off sick on average for 7.2 days up from 6.8 the previous year. It costs UK businesses 11.75bn a year, the CBI says. The CBI also estimates that 15% of all illness is due to people taking days off when they are not really ill. What College Taught Me About Teamwork Training I declared a Communications Major two years into school, after discovering that it was a subject in which I had sincere interest. Now that I have graduated from college, I look back at the myriad of group projects and interactions that I had with the fellow students. I can remember many stressful periods of working together, but also many rewarding times of working together and accomplishing our tasks as a group. In hindsight those tasks would have been much easier to complete had we received some basic teamwork training at the beginning of our program. Yes, But What Are You Really Saying? More and more I hear people misunderstanding what someone else has said to them, especially when it came through a memo or email. This can lead to a great deal of turmoil at work and affect morale. Aligning Corporate Teams Picture yourself entering a corporate meeting, team meeting, or business meeting. There you are sitting in the room, while someone in the "expert" or "boss" chair speaks to you or at you. There you are, not aligned with that person's mission or vision. There you are, feeling apart from the process. There you are, lacking energy and the desire for being there. There you are, hearing what is going wrong and what you or your team or department needs to change or improve. How are you feeling? Boost Your Success With An R&D Team One of the best ways to ensure that your planning is successful is to create your own R&D (research and development) group. All truly successful businesses have departments or teams specifically dedicated to finding and developing new and better ways to do whatever it is the company does, so why not you? Whats Your REAL problem?? When was the last time you spent excessive time and money solving a problem only to discover the problem you thought you had wasn't really the problem at all? Aligning Teams with Organizational Goals Teams don't have to be aligned with the goals of the organization. Teams can work on what they believe to be the right things. They can work diligently on creating the results they think matter. They can be completely committed to success from their perspective. Joy and Laughter in the Workplace: Lessons From the Land of OZ Turbulent Twisters Building Successful Work Relationships--Playing In The Same Sandbox Remember playing in your childhood sandbox? If you enjoyed being outside for most of the day, you could play in the sandbox for hours on end-shaping and pouring the sand or mixing it with a little water to form a castle or hill. Children enjoy playing with sand or dirt and learn at an early age how to make the most of this play time activity. Finding The Leader Within (Keys To Zen Leadership) Most believe that leadership is an innate quality that some have, not others. They believe that leaders are born not made. Nothing can be further from the truth. Each one of us has the potential to stand tall, be a light to others, clearly define a vision and mission and take charge. Within every individual an "Inner Leader" is waiting to be born. Team Building requires one great dynamic for true Success - Mateship A Successful Team is built around mateship, around respect for your team mates and for yourself. I am not saying that everyone will get on like best buddies, what I noticed is that in all our 'differences' everyone was accepted as they were, got on within the boundaries of the club and got the job done. I have seen teams that have been full of stars, as I am sure you have too, and those teams have not succeeded. They have not achieved their full potentials as individuals or as a team. Why It Pays to Out More Humor in the Workplace 1. Humor reduces stress levels and stress is the number one problem confronting employees today. Putting Your Expert Team Together As a freelance writer myself, I know how important it is to have, and keep track of, experts to interview. Here are a few ideas on the topic: Team Building Celebration Plan -- Perfect For Any Time of Year When was your last team celebration? Have you been way too busy to bother? Sometimes we get so caught up in day-to-day work that we don't take the time to step back and celebrate success. Some teams may even consider team celebrations as "silly." |
