Finding Time For Success: Important Vs Urgent
If you have a choice each day in the tasks that you face, a choice between doing what is urgent and doing what is important, which do you choose? Many of us, I fall into this trap at times still myself, find we're spinning our wheels, or chasing rabbits, or putting out fires, or whatever your favorite metaphor is for being too busy and can never seem to get the time to do the things that we know we should be, could be doing. Listen. No one ever got ahead in life, or became successful, by just doing the urgent things. No one. It just doesn't happen. The people who get ahead in life, the people who realize their goals, and achieve the things they want in their life, all have this trait in common. They do what is important. They do what is important even though it means putting off at least some of the things that are urgent, or seem urgent. First it's important to realize what are the things in your life, work, relationships, that are truly urgent, and the difference between them and those things that make a lot of noise, or that we choose to worry about, and place too much urgency on getting them done. Sometimes those things are just life, just living, doing our daily routines. Not too long ago I set aside one day. I decided that I would do nothing 'urgent.' Nothing. It wasn't really easy, let me tell you. There were those emails, those little life things that kept creeping in, trying to distract me. But I just kept thinking. "Today is an important day." Wow, what a day I had. I accomplished more in that day than I had done in several days prior, nothing fell apart because I didn't do it that day, and I felt great about my day and myself. Now I set aside time to do the important things. Another thing I do is create an urgency for doing them. This has a major, multiplying effect as well. You'll see that less and less of the so-called urgent things are popping up. By doing the important things, many of what used to be urgent things are no longer issues. Why? Because I'm ahead of the game. Take the time to do what you know is key to your success, development, and growth. Try it. Pick one day, or part of a day if that's too much for you at first. And have an "important day." Allen Williams is a professional educator, speaker and writer. Perhaps a teacher or a parent would utter those words to you on a regular basis. It was so much easier to slouch and perhaps it still is. Preventing Setbacks: Compulsive Eating, Binge Eating, And Eating Addictions On your journey to moving past using food to cope with life's difficulties, you will experience good days and bad days. It takes a lot of work to develop self-compassion and much practice utilizing new ways of thinking and acting. It is my belief that what is commonly referred to as "relapses" or "set-backs" are not a step back in time, but an important experience needed to gain new understandings and to strengthen new choices. Set Yourself Up For Success I receive several emails every week asking me about how to become successful. It is tempting to just refer people to my books and articles. Attitude Is The Key To Success We all want success in life. We want success in our home life, business life, and in our relationships with others. The most important single factor that guarantees our success in every aspect of our lives is having a positive attitude. Without a positive attitude success is not possible. Earl Nightingale call attitude "the magic word." The Secret to Intense Focus By One of the common elements you see in almost all successful people is focus. Breakfast of Failures "If you want to increase your success rate, double your failure rate." --Thomas Watson, Sr. Founder of IBM Reading-The Best 15 minutes Youll Ever Invest I recently was made aware of two comparative statistics that I thought you might find extremely valuable. I learned that the average American reads less than 2 books per year- one and a half to be exact, with almost two thirds of those going unfinished. On the whole, Americans have lost the habit of reading good books. How Do You Spell Success A person who is illiterate can look at a word without knowing what it means. Perhaps he can recognize the shape of some of the letters; perhaps she even knows that certain of these shapes are representative of certain sounds; still, the veil cannot be pierced. Run Towards Fear: A Prescription for Success Fear, or negative anxiety, is the modern day bubonic plague, infecting millions upon millions of people. It spreads with viral effect, and leaves behind consequences of mediocrity and regret. This "plague" is partly due to societal influences (particularly in a post-9/11 era) and partly due to individual issues (the tendency to avoid confrontation of that which we fear). However, whatever the cause, a vaccine is available, and it takes the form of moving towards that which we are most afraid of. Immediately. Thinking About Winners Have you ever thought about what makes a superstar? What attributes we admire in our heroes? Do you ever wonder were all the extra ordinary men have gone? Watch the movies that shaped our modern era, the ones which make you think about what it takes to win and what it means to be an American; what do you see? Some of the movies made heroes out of movie stars. First Blood, Rocky, Top Gun, Karate Kid, Vision Quest, Star Wars, etc. People need that, they want to emulate those traits and that success, but realize it does not happen without sacrifice. What happened to Americas driven attitude? We seem to see glimpses of it recently during tragedies; we see heroes, but why stop there? Who Is Dietrich Mateschitz? Hope you're having a GREAT Day! Adaptability as a Key to Success Do you ever stop to consider how much we change and grow as people? I'm not talking so much about "maturing" or physical growth. What I'm driving at is the changes that occur inside of us; the changes in thought and self perception. We are constantly bombarded with an incredible amount of information. Our grandparents didn't get nearly as much stimulation in their lives as we get in a single day. We are exposed to more ideas, more lifestyles, more ideologies every week than our great grandparents ever heard of. So given this fact it is imperative that we learn good coping mechanisms and a strong sense of focus. Success: What Are You Afraid Of? What are your fears? Fear of failure? Fear of success? Quantum Success Thinking It sounds simple- right? You are where you THINK you are! And it is simple but do we practice it? Of course we are where we think we are! The question is where do YOU think you are? What Makes One Person Succeed While Someone Else Fails What characteristics are common among successful people. If you analyze the success stories of history, business or your own personal experience you'll find similar habits and patterns among successful people. You've heard the old adage don't work harder work smarter or you've heard the one the exceptional salesman makes a habit of doing what the ordinary salesman doesn't do. These two saying are fine but you need to remember each of them says simply if you want to make it you will have to do more than the next person. Please keep in mind this does not require you to become a slave to your own business or organization.
